Coming Attractions
The Sports Council is continuously looking for outstanding events to bring to the Southern California area. A decision to bid on any event is made after a rigorous examination of the potential benefits and costs associated with it, including, but not limited to:
Appeal of the event to the public, especially with regard to ticket, sponsorship, merchandise and broadcast rights sales.
Event history and performance, including recent history in other markets.
Prestige of the event, especially in supporting Southern California as a popular event and visitor destination through national/international television broadcasts and national/international press coverage.
Economic benefits of the event, including the prospective impact on the Southern California accommodations, restaurant and tourist infrastructure.
Expense to the local organizer of hosting the event, such as costs related to venue rental, preparation, competitor amenities, accommodations, and marketing and promotion.
Association of the event with larger organizations and events such as national, regional and international championship events of sports on the program of the Olympic or Olympic Winter Games.
"We look at events which make economic sense," notes Sports Council President David Simon. "If the event helps to bring interesting and exciting sports into the area and can be held in a fiscally responsible way, we'd like to talk about it."
The Sports Council is also a willing partner with other local organizations bidding to bring events to the area. For example, the Sports Council worked in cooperation with the visitors and convention bureaus of Los Angeles, Pasadena and Anaheim to bring the 1993 Super Bowl to Pasadena's Rose Bowl. More recently, the Sports Council teamed with the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim to attract the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships, the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials - Gymnastics and the 2005 World Badminton Championships. Another example is the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials - Swimming. The Sports Council and the City of Long Beach partnered on the successful bid that brought the prestigious event to Long Beach for the first time in 28 years.
