About Patterson Field
Occidential houses a first-class football and track & field facility. Patterson Field, built in 1916, was renovated in 2005 with a brand new artificial surface. The Bill Henry Track served as a training facility for the 1984 Olympic Games and is considered lightning-fast. Its all-weather Rekortan surface was refurbished in 2001.
The facilities are an outgrowth of the fieldhouse - Rush Gymnasium - which opened in 1965 (capacity 1,800).
The nearby Culley Athletic Center houses a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility, locker rooms and a 2,500 square-foot weight training center.
The track is named for Bill Henry, the Sports Technical Director of the organizing committee of the 1932 Olympic Games and sports editor of the Los Angeles Times. Patterson Field is named after W.C. Patterson, a highly respected civic leader and trustee of the college from 1899-1913.
