About Weingart Stadium

The home of the East L.A. College teams for many years, ELAC's football stadium was re-named Weingart Stadium in 1984 in honor of the Weingart Foundation's $3.2 million gift to help with renovations. The facility was originally built in 1951 at a cost of $3 million. The bowl was the site of the highly successful 1984 Olympic Games field hockey competition and was the proposed site for the Los Angeles bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. USA Field Hockey staged an international tournament there in 1990.

In addition, the site has hosted dozens of track and field competitions (many years the site of the Los Angeles City section championships) and Los Angeles Salsa soccer games in the early 1990s. It is perhaps best known, however, as the long-time site of the East Los Angeles Classic football match-up between Garfield and Roosevelt high schools, which have drawn crowds in excess of 25,000.

Quick Facts

•The basics:
Seating is offered on both sides of the bowl with a total of 20,355 permanent bench seats. There is room to comfortably accommodate 2,000 for standing room, although this total has been exceeded many times. A synthetic turf field was installed for the 1984 Olympic Games, but this has been replaced by a grass field today. There is an all-weather, eight-lane, 400 meter track surrounding the field.

•Location and parking:
The stadium is located near the corner of Floral Drive and Bleakwood Avenue on the northwest edge of the campus. It can be access best from the Pomona (60) Freeway via the Atlantic Boulevard exit.

•Management:

•Technical information:
The stands are arranged on each side of the field; there are no bleachers at the ends of the field. There is good lighting for night use with six towers providing more than 100 footcandles of illumination on the field level. There is a practice field and a gymnasium behind the main stadium.

There are large locker rooms for the home and visiting team and smaller rooms for officials. There is quite a bit of storage space on the site and there is an excellent press facility at the top of the south grandstand with room for 64.

Spectator amenities include 1,500 surface parking spaces adjacent, two ticket booths at each of its four entrances (eight total), four permanent concession stands and an electronic scoreboard.
